Lucy Bowen

I watched my Grandmother knit with strips ripped from old plastic shopping bags. The usefulness of plastic socks and hats seemed negligible and likely was never the intention. Simply put, it was for the joy of the knit. I’ve watched my Mother patiently patch working blankets for years. The fabric so often sourced on journeys abroad, travels with my Dad. My own personalised blanket features cameras, compasses and camouflage patterns. Took her a year. At the age of 12 my 3rd class teacher Mrs. Moroney taught us to Crochet. No house was short Doilies and Toilet Roll Holders that year. To be clear, I know nothing of fashion and only a little of craft yet, it was immediately clear in our meeting that Lucy was intimate with both. While chatting, her hands moved with grace and ease, possessed by a thousand generations of clothing makers before her. Although she didn’t tell me, I found out later that Lucy had made her outfit for our shoot just the night before.
Operating from a new studio space in Berlin the Pandemic has allowed Lucy the time to hone her own brand of practical and contemporary wear. She uses sustainable fabrics and traditional techniques creating bespoke pieces and limited runs. Thanks for being an inspiration Lucy.
